Design Guidelines for CNC Turning

Our CNC turning guidelines outline key design considerations to improve manufacturability, enhance visual quality, and minimize production time for your parts.

  USMetric
Maximum DimensionsDiameter3.95 in.100.33mm
Length9 in.228.6mm
Minimum DimensionsDiameter0.16 in.4.07mm
Length0.05 in.1.27mm
Wall Thickness0.020 in.0.51mm

Tolerances+/- 0.005 in.+/- 0.13mm

Additional Notes on CNC Turning Guidelines

  • Small features may be allowed, but the diameter in any region should not be less than 0.030 in. (0.76mm).
  • Sharp conical points are allowed; angles should be greater than 30 degrees. Walls thinner than 0.020 in. (0.5mm) typically do not survive the machining process.

Materials for CNC Turning

We offer a wide selection of metal materials—including aluminum, brass, low carbon steel, stainless steel, steel alloys, and titanium—suitable for diverse applications across multiple industries. Select the ideal material for your turned parts to meet your specific needs.

Surface Finish Options for Turned Parts

Turned parts generally feature exceptionally smooth surface finishes, especially on cylindrical areas, which are noticeably finer when machined on a lathe compared to a mill. For components that can be produced by either method, this advantage should be considered. However, features created using live tooling, such as flats and slots, may exhibit visible tool marks.

For an upgraded appearance, metal parts can be lightly bead blasted to achieve a uniform matte finish. Additionally, harder metals like steel and stainless steel can benefit from bead blasting to deburr sharp edges and eliminate metal slivers, resulting in safer and more refined components.

What is CNC Turning?

CNC turning is a subtractive manufacturing process in which a metal rod is rotated while a cutting tool removes material to create precise final parts. Our advanced CNC lathes are equipped with live tooling, allowing us to machine flat features and holes directly into the workpiece. We also offer both outside diameter (OD) and inside diameter (ID) threading to meet a wide range of application requirements.

Turned parts can then be left as-machined, with visible tool marks, or bead blasted. When the run is complete, parts are inspected, boxed and shipped shortly thereafter.
